14 YOM placed hoverboard on charge, but after about 1 & 1/2 hours, his mother smelled burning plastic & saw smoke coming from unit. She threw towel over unit & kicked plug out of outlet, which caused sparks. Unit had melted in half with cracks.

  • Incident Description: This caller is reporting that her mother purchased a hoverboard from their online site around November 2015 and sent it to her 14 year old son for Christmas 2015. Her son placed the hoverboard on charge around the second week in January 2016 but after approximately one half hour his mother smelled plastic burning and during investigating the source of the odor went into her son's room. She saw smoke coming from the hoverboard; she grabbed a towel, threw it over the hoverboard and kicked the plug out of the outlet which caused sparks at the wall/outlet area. She moved the hoverboard and used the towel to suffocate any source of heat that could cause it to burst into flames. When she removed the towel she saw that the unit had melted in half with cracks on the halves. When she tried to pick the hoverboard up after it cooled it broke in half. She has now found that Swagway has recalled the unit and she is asking for CPSC to assist her with obtaining a refund for this hoverboard because both she and her now 15 year old son are afraid to have another hoverboard in their home. There are no injuries to report She has contacted Swagway numerous times attempting to obtain a refund and she has populated information in forms that they have instructed her to enter information.
