Incident Details
  • Incident Description: On December 2, 201 5, I purchased a hoverboard online for my 12-year-old son from Hoverboard 360 as a Christmas present. The compnay had a mailing address in New York, New York and promised 2-day delivery on the item. The company's website also advertised the hoverboards as complying with U.S. safety standards. Sometime around December 17, 2015, I received a hoverboard in a box labeled IMOTO, shipped from Hong Kong. After closely examining the hoverboard, I saw no manufacturer's label or branding on the item. I had no way of knowing what type of hover board I actually received in the mail. That, coupled with all the safety issues that were coming to ligth around that time, promtped me to contact my credit card company for assistance with returning the hoverboard. My son was disappointed when he learned that I planned to return the hoverboard and, unfortunately, I elected to keep it. After several months, I decided to allow him to practrice riding the hoverboard, but only with close supervision. I noticed that after just a few minutes of riding, the bottom of the hoverboard would become extremely hot. He was riding the hoverboard on a flat concrete surface in our garage. I also noticed the same issue when he rode the hoverboard in our kitchen, which has flat hardwoord floors. Since he was just learning to ride the hoverboard, he tended to ride very short distances before losing his balance. I did not understand how such limited use of the product led to overheating. He is no longer allowed to use the product and we have wasted $498.99, as the seller is refusing to provide a refund for the dangerous and defective item.
