Incident Details
- Incident Description: As I was opening the dishwasher door via the front handle (standing on the side), the
hinge mechanism bound and then released without warning. This caused me to lean
further forward than expected while the side of the door came in contact with, and
subsequently cut into, my shin. The hinge mechanism was never smooth, but this was
the first time it bound and then released without warning.
After treating my injury (which is now a permanent and sensitive scar), I inspected
the dishwasher to find a very sharp edge and point on the upper front corner of the door.
This condition was created by several poor design and manufacturing practices which
lead to an overhang of the plastic control panel and a protruding sharp edge and point.
While it may seem like an unlikely combination of events that led to my injury, upon
further inspection of other similar brand new, KitchenAid dishwashers, I found this
sharp edge and point condition is quite common. It is also a design that is used on
many models of Whirlpool dishwashers still on sale today.
