How to Search Reports and Recalls

For decades, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports from consumers like you about safety incidents with consumer products in and around their homes. Now, consumers and others will be able to start seeing product incident reports as they are published to CPSC's new website, SaferProducts.gov. Searching for incident reports (Reports) or for recalls on the site is quick and easy. Here's how to use the search function.

At the top of the SaferProducts.gov web page, you will see Tabs for Report, Business and Search. Click on the SEARCH tab to start. You have three different ways to do a search. Let's start with a "Keyword" search. Under the SaferProducts.gov logo, you will see "KEYWORD" next to a box in which you can type any "Key" word or words to do a search. Your key words could be general or specific. You could search for something like "cribs," or "XYZ Strollers," or even "ZX-1000 bicycles." Type in the name of the product you'd like to search in the SEARCH box. If possible, include a brand name and model number.

Let's use XYZ Strollers for an example. To the right of the Keyword box you can select the "Date Published" range for the search - from all dates to reports published during the past month. Pick one and click on the "SEARCH" button or the "ENTER" key on your keyboard. The results page comes up with both recalls and reports listed chronologically on the right. If your search produced many results, you will see all recalls at the beginning, and Reports will be displayed below them. You can choose to see reports in the short, title and summary form, or click at the top for more report details. You can click on any item to read more about it. Reports can contain information on the brand, manufacturer, when incidents occurred and any injuries or deaths. A Report could also be about a safety concern with the product.

Next, look for the manufacturer's or private labelerr's name - in this case XYZ - in the Report. If a manufacturer or private labeler has commented on the Report, you can click on the link below the company's name to see the firm's comment, or you can scroll to the bottom of the Report to see their comment. Once you're done looking at this incident, return to the PREVIOUS PAGE by using your browser's "BACK" arrow. In the left-hand column of your search results, you will see tools to filter results to get just Reports or just recalls. Click on Reports in the left-hand column and only Reports involving the product you choose will be displayed on the right side of the screen. Other filters can sort your Reports by date, product, company, brand, model, injury information, location or victim's age.

Now let's go back to look at other Search options. Click on the Search Tab to get back to the Search screen. Below the Keyword Search box you can BROWSE THESE POPULAR CATEGORIES of consumer products. These are popular searches on our website. Click on a product in a list and you will see all recalls along with any Reports received since March 2011. That's when CPSC launched SaferProducts.gov. Recalls will be shown first, followed by Reports. On the left side of the screen you can use the filters to show just Reports involving these products. If you choose RECALLS, you will see ALL recalls involving that product type. Again, filters on the left can focus your results by using details like company, brand, location, state where reported incidents happened or the age of victims if they were part of the report.

The more criteria you use, the fewer results you will get. Let's go back to the Search Page by clicking on the SEARCH Tab and look at the ADVANCED SEARCH option. To the right of the KEYWORD search is the ADVANCED SEARCH link. Click on this link and you get these four main choices. You can use one or more to do a search. Below those four boxes are more options that can narrow your search. This search function includes many of the search criteria you've seen with other options. They are laid out a little differently. For some people, it may be easier for them to use this ADVANCED SEARCH option.

Back on the Search page, on the right side, you will see links to other safety information on the site. You use these links to go to CPSC websites that offer detailed safety tips and information on important product areas. There are also links to Safety Guides including publications. Finally, when you click on the SaferProducts.gov logo at the top to go to the home page, you will see that you can access both the Keyword and the Advanced Search from the home page.

You can see that searching for consumer products at SaferProducts.gov is fast and easy. We hope that you will visit SaferProducts.gov often, that you find the site easy to use and filled with information to help keep you and your family safe. CPSC is working for you, your family, and your safety. In March 2011, SaferProducts.gov went live and began collecting Reports. Given review time provided by statute, the first searchable Reports were visible in early April 2011. As more reports are filed, reviewed and posted, more search results will become available.
