Problem: If the oven has been turned on manually, the remote control software is unable to turn off the oven, but falsely claims to have done so. This can be a fire hazard.

Oven: GE model JKD5000SN1SS, serial number HM131645Q, software version 02.13.05.11, WiFi module software version 0.0.5.54

Android App: Kitchen – GE Appliances, version 1.0.8.7 (also version 1.0.7.4)

Here are several scenarios, some where the remote control software is able to turn off the oven, and others where it fails to do so.

• With “Remote Enable” turned on, if the oven is remotely started, it is able to be remotely turned off. When pressing “Turn Off” followed by “Yes” in the app, the oven immediately turns off and the app display immediately changes to showing the oven is off. This is the expected behavior.

• Either with “Remote Enable” on or off, turn on the oven using the touchpad. The remote control app properly shows that the oven is on. In the app, tap Oven to display the monitor/control screen, which also shows that the oven is on. Press “Turn Off” and then “Yes” at the acknowledgment screen. For several seconds, sometimes as long as a minute, an orange band spins around the oven status. This is followed by the app’s oven status display changing to “Off”. However, despite the app displaying the oven as having been turned off, the oven is in fact still running. Returning to the app home screen will briefly show the oven as being off, and then updates, showing in fact that the oven is still on. Tapping on Oven to return to the monitor/control screen now shows that the oven is still on. Further attempts to remotely turn off the oven fail in the same manner.

• Either with “Remote Enable” on or off, turn the oven on using the touchpad. The remote control app properly shows that the oven is on. Using the remote control app’s monitor/control screen, tap on the oven status and make a change, either to the temperature or to the cooking mode and press “Set”. Pressing “Turn off” and answering “Yes” will now immediately turn off the oven with the app’s oven status also immediately changing to off. While changing an oven setting restores the ability to turn off the oven remotely, the oven settings should not be modifiable when “Remote Enable” is turned off.

I attempted to report these problems both to the GE Connection help line and to the general GE help line. Neither was willing/able to take this information and escalate it to someone who could act on it. Your assistance in resolving these safety issues will be greatly appreciated.
