Comment from Panasonic Corporation of North America 8/1/2018
Panasonic is committed to engineering and manufacturing safe, quality consumer products. All of Panasonic’s products are designed to meet or exceed Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) safety standards, and all applicable government regulations.

Panasonic Microwave ovens (“MWO”) are evaluated and comply with sharp edge testing in accordance with Underwriters laboratories UL1439, the standard for sharpness of edges. Panasonic microwaves also are certified compliant to UL 923 microwave cooking appliances, which also calls for similar testing for sharp edges. In addition, our MWOs comply with accessibility laws and regulations.

The consumer in this case reports that she suffers from paralysis on the right side and therefore must use her left hand/arm to open the MWO from a seated position in a wheelchair. She reports that she has twice had the door of the MWO cut her forearm as it opens and hits her arm. The consumer did not specify where the MWO is situated in her home and she did not describe the manner in which she reached for and opened the MWO on either occasion.

We appreciate this information being brought to Panasonic’s attention. Panasonic quickly contacted the consumer in order to obtain the Microwave Oven for examination and testing upon learning of her report of harm. Although it has now been more than ten (10) days since we supplied the consumer with prepaid shipping arrangements, we have yet to receive the MWO from the consumer. At this time, given that the unit complies with applicable standards and testing, we have no reason to believe that the oven door had impermissibly sharp edges at the time it left the manufacturer’s control.
We appreciate the cooperation of the consumer in bringing this information to our attention and in allowing us the opportunity to comment.
