Black mold growth in Maytag washing machine MHW8200FC.

Eight months after purchasing the Maytag MHW8200FC washing machine, I discovered an incredibly nasty growth of black mold in the dispenser cavity (see photo). There was no way to clean the area; Maytag had to replace the entire cavity and dispenser unit. Maytag could provide no method for either preventing the mold from recurring or for removing it once it had formed. Once the unit is out of warranty, I will be responsible for replacing the parts myself on a routine basis, or else just living with the mold.

The unit is located in a large laundry room with the door always open and a hepa air filter running 24-7. I leave the door to the washer open when not in use, as well. I do not live in an excessively humid climate (Oregon) and the house is air conditioned in the summer. I never had a problem with mold growth in my old front-loading washer which lasted over 15 years.

Since black mold is a known health hazard, I feel the CPSC should be aware of this product and its potential for causing sickness when used according the manufacturer's instructions.

I purchased the machine on 11/18/2016 and the parts were replaced on 9/6/2017.

I have attached a photo of the mold; please contact me if you did not receive the photo.

Thank you.
