At about 4:40 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2015, Consumer turned on the self-clean function on the GE Model # CGS980 SEM3SS, Serial # VR196177P. Consumer also turned on the exhaust fan for the oven and also one for the kitchen. At about 5:30 p.m. the fire alarm went off. Consumer observed flames shooting through the vents of the oven. Consumer pushed the clear/off button on the stove. Consumer's daughter contacted the emergency department, who responded. The home filled with smoke. The fire in the oven decreased but the entire home filled with smoke and there is still a residue. Consumer and consumer's other daughter are still feeling the effects of the smoke in their lungs. As the temperature cooled down the emergency responder was able to open the oven door. The department brought an additional fan to help air out the chemicals. The fire department advised Consumer not to use the oven until GE clears it use. Consumer contacted customer service the same day and was advised that GE would send someone to check the oven on June 1.
