The submitter is filing a report on a gas range which he feels poses a fire hazard. The submitter purchased the range and put it in a house that he rents to a family.

On 03/01/15 (estimated) the submitter's tenant used the right front burner and when the tenant tried to turn the knob to the "off" position the knob would not move. The knob seemed stuck or locked and would not move in any direction. The tenant removed the pot from the burner and called the submitter. The right front burner was on high heat level. The submitter arrived about 20 minutes later. The submitter used the oven door to pull the unit out and away from the cabinet. The submitter moved the unit to the left so he could get to the back of the unit and shut the gas valve off. Once the gas valve was shut off the submitter noticed the burner turned off.

On 03/02/15 (estimated) the consumer contacted a local technician to examine the unit. The technician told the consumer that the unit needed a new valve. The consumer went to a local appliance store to order the part which cost $85.

On 03/07/15 (estimated) the consumer receive the replacement part and the consumer installed the part in the range.

On 03/09/15 the submitter contacted the firm and informed them of the incident. The firm told the submitter that the unit is out of warranty but he could purchase an extended warranty. The submitter was concerned that the valve was damaged on a relatively new unit but the consumer states the firm did not seem concerned with the safety hazard the range may pose.

The unit is used daily. There are no prior.
