On or about 5/15/13, I filled a Blitz U.S.A. Inc. 5 gallon plastic gas can with approximately 4.9 gallons of regular unleaded ethanol-free gasoline, added approximately 60 ml of “[REDACTED]” Fuel Stabilizer and stored the container on a bare section of ground approximately 8 feet from my house. On 5/25/13, I discovered that subject container had a crack across the top and had leaked some of the fuel. The contents were emptied into one of the fuel tanks of my zero-turn mower and the can was returned to Lowe’s for credit. The maximum daytime temperatures during that time in Louisiana were in the mi to upper 80s (about 87 degrees F), however, the can was stored in an area that receives direct sunlight until 5 or 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Subject fuel can was purchased this year to replace a much older can that had developed a small crack and a slight fuel seepage. Had this failure occurred in my wife’s mini-van while evacuating after a hurricane, such as Katrina, it could have caused a fire.
