I was making dinner in my eleven year old (purchased Feb. 2002) GE Spectra oven which was set at 350 degrees and was on for about an hour. I opened the oven door to check the roasting pan and baste the meat. As I was closing the door I heard a loud pop and hiss and a fireball appeared on the bottom element. It began to flame and throw sparks and follow the element. I closed the door and turned the oven off, but it continued. I then used the circuit breaker to sop the current, and it eventually went out. I researched this on the Internet and have found many references to this happening to others, but all said that GE did not admit to a problem. I'm afraid to have this fixed and use the oven again since this is definitely a known issue. I'm certainly happy this happened when I was there and shudder to think what would have happened if it happened an hour earlier.
