On October 29, 2012 I purchased a Chefmate CM-1250 coffee maker. This coffee maker is made in China. I followed the instructions in the box to run plain water through the unit without coffee to clean it out. I found that during this cycle, and every cycle thereafter that a strong plastic smell emanated from the unit. It was at its strongest when I removed the coffee carafe from the unit. The smell was so strong as to make me feel nauseous.

Investigating this online I found that searching for "made in china smell" found over 15 million hits for pages discussing this issue with many products made in China since approximately 2005.

On an unrelated issue, the power switch to this unit broke after less than a month of use. At first, the power switch remained in the 'On' position and could not be turned off. This could be a safety hazard as an empty coffee maker could pose a fire hazard. Then, I was able to turn it off, but then could not turn it back on.

I was able to return it to Target for a full refund without issue. I continue, however, to be concerned about the possible hazard that this product, and others like it, pose to the consumer.
