Pyrex 9x13 inch glass pan

I was baking brownies at 300 degrees F in a glass Pyrex 9x13 pan. The pan was new, purchased in the last few months. We heard a "pop" noise and my son opened the oven enough to look inside. The Pyrex pan had exploded into a thousand pieces which were scattered all over the oven. I contacted Pyrex to find out about the pan. The representative read off a list of "don'ts" and told me to collect all the pieces and save them until I received a replacement pan. Since many of the pieces were stuck to the brownies, I used a plastic trash bag to contain the pieces. Where the shards came in contact with the plastic bag, they sliced through the plastic. I ended up putting the whole mess into a cardboard box. I took great care in collecting the pieces but still ended up with a splinter in my foot. There were so many pieces in the oven, I used my shopvac to collect them.

Although we had used the pan approximately two times before, we had not done any of the "don'ts" listed by the representative. I have another Pyrex pan which is the same size but probably 20 or more years old. I have never had any problems with this pan. Even if Pyrex sends me a replacement pan, I will be hesitant to use it. I have already purchased a metal pan as a replacement.

Interestingly, when I went online to google Pyrex, "Pyrex pan exploding" came up as a search option. When I followed that search, I found many reports of exploding pans, so with associated injuries, including one poor woman who was blinded. Talking to the Pyrex representative, I got the impression that she was trying to blame me for the pan explosion. I assure you, this was not my fault. I could do the exact same thing with my old Pyrex pan and not have a problem. This is a product problem.

I called the manufacturer. They told me to keep the shards in case the "lab" wanted to look at them. I received an email today indicating that they are sending me a new pan. However, I will be very leery of using it.

You can avoid the most common causes of thermal breakage by following four simple rules: 1. Always place hot glass bakeware on a dry, cloth potholder or towel. Never place hot glass bakeware on top of the stove, on a metal trivet, on a damp towel, directly on a counter or in a sink.
2. Never put glass bakeware directly on a burner or under a broiler. 3. Always allow the oven to fully preheat before placing glass bakeware in the oven. 4. Always cover the bottom of the dish with liquid before cooking meat or vegetables. As part of our standard procedure, whenever an injury is reported, we ask the consumer to send World Kitchen the broken dish to allow us to confirm product identity and evaluate the breakage.
