In July 2010 I purchased a GE Over the Range Microwave Oven ,model #JVM1740SPISS and serial #GT927755B from Sears for our summer house in Seldovia, Alaska. After returning this May of 2011, I noticed that the light underneath the microwave that lights up the range top produced a extremely hot spot on the corresponding area inside the microwave oven to the extent that it caused the paint to bubble up in that spot and the area was almost too hot to touch ! This light has two settings - dim and bright and also has a nightlight setting. I called GE consumer division and was put in phone contact with a repairman in a nearby city. ( Our town is accessable by plane or boat only) After researching the problem , he concluded it was a product defect and unrepairable. I am concerned that this overheated spot could cause a burn and maybe even a fire ? GE is supposed to be looking into it and get back to me, but now I cannot use the light for fear of what danger, if any, this will cause. [REDACTED]
