COFFEEMAKER FIRE HAZARD

While brewing a pot of coffee one recent morning, my CUISINART Model No. DC-1100 began to produce smoke from the underside and/or rear of the unit. It also produced a strong odor of an electrical fire and/or smoldering.

When I noticed the smoke/odor, I immediately unplugged the appliance. As I did this, I heard a "whoosh" sound, the kind of noise that is made when something catches fire. I saw no flame, however. The coffeemaker continued to smoke and produce an strong odor.

I threw out the coffeemaker on the next garbage day. I now regret this, however, since cursory online research suggests Cuisinart coffeemakers (other models, too) are the target of more than a few fire-related consumer complaints. Several Websites I read included consumer remarks that, when contacted, Cuisinart customer service representatives said they had no previous such reports. But if the incidents are as plentiful as the Internet suggests, this would doubtless fall under the "known problem" category.

My coffeemaker was less than one year old. I have not informed Cuisinart of this incident because I cannot find the original receipt. However, I may yet contact the company, if only to (hopefully) cause an internal report with the manufacturer.

Because of numerous Internet consumer complaints regarding the alleged fire hazard of several models of Cuisinart coffeemakers, I plan to add my experience to the manufacturer's list of apparent electrical problems with their product.
